Monarch of the Plains, by sculptor Stephen C. Leblanc, was dedicated in the plaza in front of Balch Fieldhouse and Folsom Folsom Field, on October 27, 1995.
Balch Fieldhouse was officially opened in 1937, then just known as the CU Fieldhouse. The building, covering 37,050 square feet and made primarily of stone and concrete, was built at a cost of 4,500. In 1976-77, the building’s name was changed to Balch Fieldhouse, in honor of Roland "Doc" E. Balch, a long-time member of the athletic and physical education departments and coach of the swimming team from 1949-61. Over the years, it has served as the home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as gymnastics, indoor track and wrestling.
The University of Colorado at Boulder, known as CU-Boulder or CU, is the flagship university of the University of Colorado system and was founded five months before Colorado was admitted to the union in 1876. Comprising nine colleges and schools, the university offered over 150 academic programs, enrolled 28,988 students, and granted 6,781 degrees in 2007.
